Welcome to Speculations By the Sea, where the musings are free but the laughs cost extra. For the last three years I have found a home working at the Bistro By the Sea, in Matunuck RI. It has been said in the Providence Journal that, “Backstage at Theatre By The Sea’s restaurant kitchen, there’s high drama to be found every night, a dependable 90 minutes of fiery action, random moments of impending disaster, and a multi-layered love story electrifying the room.” Though a bit exaggerated I find every night at the bistro has stories to be shared and philosophies to be formed. Whether I am hosting or serving, my co workers who I could consider family help weave the story of an entertaining adventure, relatable to all food service workers, or comedy seekers.

Mondays, the best day of the week in the restaurant business!

What does Bistro by the Sea do on their day off? ...Recuperate from having their butt kicked by server and superwoman Kim in an annual 4 mile race. Fondly known as KimZilla or Kimballs, it seems that Kim has found the fountain of youth; which is apparently in short supply, because she failed to share with the rest of us.

The Bistro is the funniest family restaurant around because it brings people back for years and years and years. This is very un-characteristic of most restaurants but it is the family atmosphere which keeps us all on a short leash. As you can tell each of my “characters” and coworkers are very diverse in skills and careers, but it is the summer in our secret garden which brings us together.

It is the reoccurring nature of employment that causes use to notice our old timers. Ron, bartender, has been working at the restaurant as long if not longer than Kimballs, however, he is about a foot shorter and looks about 10 years older. (Ron, you don’t look old, please don’t kill me!) Come to find out Kim is actually older! Kim is our bombshell blonde that looks like she’s pushing 25!

Sunday Kim bragged that she was the oldest runner on our seahorse team but also the fastest during the annual Run 4 Kerri. So in addition to her ability to look younger than our youngest bus girl, grow a kick a&% garden, be not taking s#@T waitress, and cutting edge artist, she can kick everyone’s butt running! If I knew she was going to brag about it the rest of the night, I would have tried harder to beat her.

Watch out Kimballs, we’re coming to get you next year!

  1. Please plant a big ole wet kiss on Ron and Kimballs (I can't believe you guys call her that too) from Michele Samal, former Sea Horse Grill manager and TBTS Company Manager. Many great times have been had on that property...so many in fact, I got married on the beach there many years later. Kim was my photographer. Miss all the fun with Duane and Carlene and the whole dysfunctional family!

    Oh, love the blog!
